RACHEL'S CHALLENGE is a powerful, comprehensive multimedia program that curbs neighborhood and school bullying while inspiring a positive, inviting school-wide culture. The presentations are based on the life and writings of Rachel Scott, who was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy of April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries are the foundation of the life changing school program known as RACHEL'S CHALLENGE. On Wednesday, February 8th the students, parents and faculty of Holy Rosary will start a chain reaction as they participate in RACHEL'S CHALLENGE!
Two assemblies are scheduled during the school day, each specifically designed with age appropriate messages to motivate students to change for the better the way they treat others.
All who accept RACHEL'S CHALLENGE will have the opportunity to sign banners affirming their commitment which will be displayed prominently in our school. The program also features an interactive training session, involving both adult and student leaders. This training demonstrates ways to sustain the positive momentum created at the very powerful student assemblies. At 7:00 p.m. that evening parents, parishioners and the Edmonds community are invited to a similar assembly which will focus on how adults can reinforce the decisions our youth are making.
Plan to learn about and support RACHEL'S CHALLENGE with your children!
Rachel's Challenge has been funded by a GENEROUS grant from the HAZEL MILLER FOUNDATION.
"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same." Rachel Joy Scott August 5. 1981 - April 20, 1999 |

Holy Rosary Annual Speech Tournament
January 27, 2012
Dear Students and Parents,
It’s time once again to begin preparing for the Annual Holy Rosary Speech Tournament. The dates for the tournament this year have been set for March 14 and 16. March 14 will be the preliminary rounds for all grades. March 16 is the finals for grades three through eight.
K-2 Poetry 3- 4 Storybook 5 Prepared Reading 6 Expository 7 Oratory 8 Editorial Comment; Impromptu (Optional)
It is our goal to make the speech tournament an interesting and enjoyable learning experience for all of the students. We have assigned specific types of speeches for each grade so that all students will have the opportunity to prepare several different types of speeches by the time they graduate from eighth grade. This will give the students a chance to perform a variety of speeches and hopefully find a speaking style which best suits them. The students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be judged against students in their own class.
Since some of the speeches are new to the students, the teachers will be using language arts time to teach the students how to write and perform the various speeches. The teachers may ask the students to practice parts of their speeches during class time. However, the bulk of the preparation and practicing will be done at home.
Detailed information about each event is described in the brochure on the Holy Rosary website. Schedules will be forthcoming on the website soon. Please direct questions to Colleen Daigle or Malia Santucci.
